A Popularity Contest

Nov 28, 2001 -- Search engines follow a set of rules known as an algorithm. All major search engines use a ranking algorithm that involves the location and frequency of keywords on your Web page. Further, they assume that the number of links to your Web site is an indicator of its quality and value.

Some links are weighted more heavily than others. As Danny Sullivan of searchenginewatch.com explains: "A link from a page within Yahoo should mean more than a link from someone's personal page, since the criteria to be listed is much higher. Likewise, links from other 'important' sites should carry more weight."

To improve your search engine rankings, seek reciprocal links from the top-ranked Web pages for your keywords. You can also ask for a link to your site in directories (search engines powered by human beings) or trade links with complementary Web sites.
