Employee Benefit: A Free PC
Mar 15, 2000 -- Finally, a tech company jumps on the free PC benefit bandwagon. Following similar programs from Delta Airlines and Ford Motor Co., Intel will give free computers and Internet access to its employees. Can't think of a better way to keep employees on the leading edge of e-business technology and skills.
If your company can't afford to give away computers as an employee benefit, consider this novel way of deciding who gets new computers: Seko Worldwide in Elk Grove, Ill., runs an essay contest. Seko, a freight-forwarding company, asked 80 of its independent sales reps to compete for 20 fully loaded Toshiba Satellite Pro laptops. The gist of the essay question: Why should you get a new laptop, and how will it benefit you and Seko?
Inc.'s Susan Greco writes: "One rep gave the laptop a name and told a story from its perspective. Another recorded a song to the tune of the 'Beverly Hillbillies' theme: 'This is a story about a man named Bob, whose computer was so slow, he could hardly do his job...' Top 40 material it wasn't -- but the man got his laptop."
